LAPI 825 - Age of Melancholy Age of Melancholy focuses on how Renaissance “scientific” models of the self were assimilated into artistic work. We explore how the idea of the four tempers influences the various arts by looking at work by Durer, Thomas Campion, John Donne, Milton and Shakespeare. The course also traces a parallel between Renaissance anatomies and Psychoanalysis, dealing in particular with the way in which the “talking cure” served poets like Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton and John Berryman.
