Description

Funded by a grant from the Library of Congress, Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) at the University of the Arts creates professional development opportunities for K-12 educators, librarians, and community arts educators in the greater Philadelphia area. Our work focuses on enhancing cross-curricular and thematic learning by helping educators incorporate arts-based primary resources into dynamic classroom experiences.

The TPS-UArts program leverages UArts faculty and local arts organization partners to utilize the vast cultural resources of our nation’s library for teachers and their students. TPS-UArts Teacher Resource Guides and tuition-free courses for teachers explore arts-based topics, including design, music, photography, poetry, printmaking, and theater, through the Library of Congress’ digital collections of primary sources.

Program Objectives

Participants will be able to: 

• Develop the ability to use primary sources to promote their inquiry, development of historical thinking, and literacy skills

• Determine whether a source is primary or secondary depending on the time or topic under study

• Describe the benefits of teaching with primary sources

• Analyze a primary source using Library of Congress tools and other resources

• Access teaching tools and primary sources from loc.gov/teachers

• Identify key considerations for selecting primary sources for instructional use (for example, student needs and interests, teaching objectives, etc.)

• Access primary sources and teaching resources across multiple formats and facilitate a primary source analysis 

• Analyze a set of related primary sources in order to identify multiple perspectives
