C O N T E N T S

Description

The Graduate Certificate in the Arts includes the study and practice of studio arts (visual and performing arts), museum and primary source,s and arts integration to facilitate educators’ abilities to apply skills in the arts to classroom curriculum across all content areas.  Aligned to the National Core Arts Standards, teachers in the Graduate Certificate in The Arts will create works of art under the tutelage of professional working artists who are experts in their art forms. Teachers will deepen their knowledge of historical and cultural content and context, aesthetics and critique, and apply their learning across content areas. 

The Certificate in the Arts is designed for in-service teachers.

Program Objectives

Students in the Certificate in the Arts will:

  • Develop an understanding of the human evolutionary imperative to make art
  • Understand the important historical, philosophical, and political influences that have shaped education in general and art education specifically
  • Understand the importance and relevance of incorporating museum and primary resources into K-12 curriculum, inclusive of texts, lectures, site visits, and studio practice
  • Understand the connection between creative and cognitive growth in K-12 students and how art making experiences impact student learning
  • Build a critical awareness and understanding of the visual culture in which we live so that teachers can better prepare students to become media-literate
  • Integrate museum and primary resources into the K-12 curriculum
  • Develop fluency with elements and principles of visual art through hands-on engagement in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional media appropriate for K-12 teaching

  •  Select 1 course from subjects: EDPD, ETEC, INCL, LITY, MTEC, PRES, UTPS, VPAS 3 credits
