LACR 229 - SIFT: Sociology and Contemporary Society

This course introduces the nature of scientific sociology by exploring sociological research about contemporary American society.  We begin with a general examination of both sociology and science, including how science and values are related.  We then explore several sociological research methods by case studies on such topics as happiness, sexual fidelity, couples, success, violence, street gangs, and suicide.  We conclude with a consideration of what sociology has discovered about some aspects of American society such as class, mobility, marriage and the family, and religion.
