STMR 608 Introduction to Museum Education
3 credits 45 hours 600 level graduate course
Designed with both classroom educators and community-based educators in mind, this course will provide an overview of skills needed to engage the museum field as an educator and to use educational resources of museums from around the world to enhance their curriculum. At a time when museums have increasingly rewritten their mission statements to focus on education as their core objective, this course introduces students to the wide range of skills associated with the educational function of museums. The course reviews the core responsibilities of museum educators and the potential for education both within and beyond exhibitions. The course will also offer opportunities for learning how classroom educators can more effectively partner with museums and how those inside and outside the museum walls can advocate for diverse and inclusive perspectives on a wide range of discipline-specific collections.
This course may be completed 2 times for credit. This course may not be audited.
