THEA 358 Introduction to History of Architecture and Clothing
3 credits 45.0 hours 300 level undergraduate course
This course surveys architecture, decorative arts, and clothing of selected cultures, both dominant and marginalized. As we travel through time and space, students will discuss the design traditions and practices in their larger political, social, and environmental contexts. They will become familiar with historical design vocabulary and compare styles and silhouettes, while paying attention to issues around (mis)representation, stereotyping, and cultural appropriation. Students will also work on their research skills, recognizing the responsible role of theatre and film designers, directors, and performers as important culture makers who have the potential to make a significant impact in their communities.
This course is not repeatable for credit. This course can fulfill a discipline history elective, critical studies elective, or general elective requirement.
