THEA 151 Survey of Theater Arts

3 credits 45.0 hours
100 level undergraduate course

Survey of Theater Arts challenges assumptions of what theater is and can be by examining what it has been in the past (both 5,000 years ago and yesterday). The course considers live art in its social, cultural and historical context. Students investigate how and why theatrical styles emerge and how artists use style in their work to reach and make an impact on an audience. Students study and explore the languages, theories, concepts and techniques of performers, playwrights, directors, designers, dramaturgs and producers. Students conduct their own research while they read and analyze plays, do field work and have complex and invigorating discussions. Students examine and question the art form and their own art. Through all of these endeavors, class community develops the ethics/ethos of personal artistic practice in the performing arts.

Priority enrollment to majors in the School of Theater Arts.
This course is not repeatable for credit.
