Description

The MEd in Educational Technology is designed for educators looking to gain and deepen expertise integrating technology into teaching and learning. Aligned with standards established by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), our MEd in Educational Technology provides a comprehensive understanding of the role of technology in today’s classroom and enables educators to acquire the skills and knowledge base to effectively utilize technology in all aspects of teaching.

The MEd in Educational Technology consists of 30 credits (ten courses) in a flexible format and offered at various locations, in-person, hybrid, and online.   The ten total courses are comprised of six core courses in designing technology-based learning environments, differentiated instruction, technology integration, emerging technologies, and multimedia; a capstone course (research/project based); and four elective courses.  In recognition of the evolving technological landscape, the curriculum and course content will be evaluated and adapted to align with federal, state, and industry standards; and to ensure responsiveness to advancements in technology.

Program Objectives

Students in the MEd in Educational Technology will:

  • Identify and distinguish between formative, summative, diagnostic, and benchmark testing
  • Identify best practices in both embedded assessment and standardized, performance-based testing
  • Understand how effective the implementation of technology is a strong predictor of student achievement, promotion and graduation, course completion, and student behavior
  • Develop a working knowledge of federal, state and local policies and initiatives that are currently driving K–12 technology assessment
  • Obtain the skills necessary to select an appropriate assessment approach for a group of students including cost analyses, technology planning and implementation
  • Use multiple measures to interpret and evaluate student achievement. via digital assessments
  • Create a balanced picture of student achievement through the use of tools that measure student growth and performance
  • Develop practical instructional strategies to accommodate a broad range of learning styles, abilities, and curriculum content
  • Understand the broad range of 21-c devices and tools and how to determine the appropriate mix to meet student needs and learning styles
  • Understand the what, why, when and how of appropriate educational technology integration and its application to differentiated instruction
  • Understand how, in addition to increased competencies across subject areas, the integration of technology can aid in the development of such higher order abilities as thinking critically, engaging in creative/complex problem solving and applied thinking
  • Compare and contrast the ethics of the digital landscape, and application to educational practices
  • Identify and analyze ethical issues, and formulate a code of ethics, applicable to today’s classroom
  • Impart to students appropriate standards for documenting and citing the work of others
  • Better understand how to incorporate 21-c technologies into the curriculum design, instructional practice, and assessment
  • Develop a deeper understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Demonstrate the ability to design data collection instruments and conduct data collection
  • Analyze, interpret and report on the results of original research
  • Synthesize MEd coursework and apply understandings within area of emphasis
  • Demonstrate mastery of Educational Program Design through the creation of a research paper, research project, or curriculum unit
