Introduction to the School

The School of Design integrates the design programs including Graphic Design, Industrial Design and Web Development and Interaction Design while greatly enhancing the opportunity for collaboration between design principles and preparing the way for emerging pathways of study in design. The shared curriculum in the School of Design maps the common areas of overlap among all majors and concentrations in the school. Extending vertically throughout the entire four years, this common curriculum will create a shared culture among design students and faculty while exposing students to a range of ideas, methods and disciplines contained within design.

Program Objectives

  • Build a shared culture within the School of Design among students and faculty
  • Generally introduce students to issues, methods and professional aspects of contemporary design practices as well as the history and theory of design
  • Acquaint students with the various concentrations, majors and other curricular pathways available within the School of Design by interacting with students and faculty from across the school
  • Impart basic knowledge and skills that can be shared between these various design concentrations, majors and paths of study
  • Promote essential literacy in all aspects of design principles, processes, methods and tools while imparting to students a common critical vocabulary for design thinking, making and discourse
  • Promote interaction between students of all design majors and increase cross-disciplinary activity within the school by strengthening skills of collaboration and team-building
