HIST 223 Inventing Ireland

College of Critical & Professional Studies

3 credits 45.0 hours
200 level undergraduate course

We will take the long view of Irish history and of its changing and developing culture. With nods to geography, to language, to Irish prehistory, and to its earliest social organization, our course will begin in earnest with the arrival of Christianity to Ireland’s shores. From there, we will review the various waves of invasions of Ireland, including the Vikings and the Anglo-Normans, and their ultimate consequence-conquest. This latter circumstance will inform large parts of the rest of our term, from the first Gaelic resistance to British rule through the medieval period and into the modern as we come to grips with one of Ireland’s defining questions, “Whether to wear green or orange on St. Patrick’s Day.”
